Arnoult, a.k.a; SCP-68228.[edit]

The SCP Foundation could easily be considered the largest joint or community writing project in the world. Sault has developed his first entry into this project. Thusly named, SCP-68228, Arnoult.

The Story[edit]

Born in the shadow of the Salem witch trials, Arnoult is an ordinary cat until a fateful encounter with a powerful witch bestows upon him an extraordinary gift—immortality. With each passing life, Arnoult bears silent witness to the follies and triumphs of mankind, his fur carrying the whispers of the ages. Yet, this gift comes with a curse: to pass judgement on any soul that crosses his path, shaping the fate of the innocent and guilty alike. As the centuries unfold, Arnoult's lives become entangled with the most pivotal moments of human history, from the cobblestone streets of colonial America to the gleaming corridors of the present day.

Preview[edit]

Have you ever heard the saying, "It is an omen of bad luck for a black cat to cross your path"? If you haven't, it has been said. If you have heard the saying, you most likely wouldn't know how it became a saying. The fact is, that superstitious saying comes directly from the life of a black, feral cat who is known as, Arnoult.

Arnoult wasn't an evil being. Neither was he an omen. The truth, as always, was much more layered. Most encounters anyone had with him were benign. And if you saw him at all, it was only for a moment as he ducked out of sight. You only had to be concerned if you were up to something heinous and Arnoult happened to cross your path.

Special Containment Procedures[edit]

[SCP]-68228 has been seen to temporarily imprint itself to certain individuals for periods up to but never exceeding 14 days. During this time of imprinting, the anomalous effects do not appear to have an effect on the subject that SCP-68228 has imprinted with. However, anyone else who comes within SCP-68228s area of influence will be subject to SCP-68228 anomalous effects.

This is the only kind of "containment" that has been observed as being possible by the foundation. Any attempts to purposely capture SCP-68228 has resulted in a variety of consequences for foundation personnel. These consequences range from foundation personnel becoming exceedingly lost even when said personnel has extensive knowledge and experience of the area; to painful and horrific deaths that occur during usually benign activities.

  • Protocol 1: Being that SCP-68228 has a clearance level 4 status, most foundation personnel should not be aware of SCP-68228, thus, SCP-68228 should have no effect to their lives. Only Class A, Class B, and very few Class C personnel should ever know about SCP-68228s existence. In the event that foundation personnel of any class comes into contact with SCP-68228, foundation personnel should remain at least 1000 yards from SCP-68228. Any closer and consequences from the anomalous effects could begin to manifest. If SCP-68228 begins to imprint with any foundation personnel outside of a foundation facility; protocol 1 should be followed. If foundation personnel is not Class A, Class B, or Class C; a temporary access level should be permitted for the foundation subject that SCP-68228 has imprinted with.
  • Protocol 2: Should SCP-68228 come into contact with any head of state or military individual with access to, or has the ability to enter into armed conflict on an international level; Director Sault should be notified immediately. After Director Sault has been reached, foundation personnel should use credentials to coordinate the movement of the individuals who are Class A, Class B, and Class C away from SCP-68228. Class D and Class E personnel are permitted to approach SCP-68228 and should not be informed of SCP-68228 or of it's anomalous effects. Class D or Class E personnel should then be directed to an off site secured location and wait for the imprinting process to begin, or, SCP-68228 will simply remove itself from containment.

Protocol 2 should also be invoked should SCP-68228 come within 3000 yards of any government facility, military base, or special containment site.

Description[edit]

SCP-68228 is a slightly above average sized specimen of felis catus, also known as the domestic cat. There is only one known instance of SCP-68228 in existence. There are no known effective containment procedures as SCP-68228 has never successfully been //**fully**// contained.

SCP-68228 is responsible for the "superstition" and/or the supernatural beliefs that reference black cat omens. The most popular omen being, "Bad luck will fall upon anyone who crosses paths with a black cat..."; other popular sources reference black cats acting as an omen of death.

The full anomalous effects of SCP-68228 have not been completely studied. Most data available being observational materials of varying quality. Foundation researchers believe that several global/national events that have occurred, have done so under the influence of SCP-68228.

Appearance

The breed of feline SCP-68228 most closely resembles could be is that of the French, Chartreux. Although SCP-68228 has spots that appear to be similar to the Bengal cat breed. Instead of the bright orange of a Bengal, SCP-68228 has completely black fur. The spots are invisible in most instances, however, particular wavelengths of light bring into clarity. SCP-68828 is estimated to be the following dimensions. 57 cm (22 in) in head-to-body length and 41 cm (16 in) in height, with about 39 cm (15 in) long tail.

The fur color of SCP-68228 is black. Hexadecimal color configuration is #000;(or)(#000000;). General color name, RGB or CMYK; Jet Black. SCP-68228's eyes can appear golden, with jet black irises or can be multi-colored depending on the time of day. Based on recent testing, the mood of SCP-68228 seems to have a transformative effect on eye color.

SCP-68228 is in every way like any other domestic cat in temperament and nature, however anomalous events occur in the presence of the specimen. It is assumed that there is a distance SCP-68228 needs to be from a subject before the anomalous effect can act upon a subject. The precise effective distance is unknown as SCP-68228 has //never// been in containment.

Foundation personnel observations have established the following particulars concerning the anomalous effects of SCP-68228.

  • Individuals who come into close proximity (500-1000 yards) to SCP-68228 will begin to observe anomalous effects.
  • Effects that occur are dependent upon the individual subject. As far as foundation personnel can determine, the anomalous effect was determined by the amount of positivity or negativity the individual has put into the world.
  • Subjects who have a positive balance will experience an upswing of luck, while those who have a negative balance, face varying levels of misfortune.

The potential for major outcomes in the negative is very high. Coupled with the wide and variant distance at which SCP-68228 is effective, are the variables that has led to SCP-68228s' Keter classification.
